ready, set, go!to young to live a lie, look into my eyes. back to zero, your time's about to come. let them know you're not just anyone. Man this living on your own thing was hell! Well, not really hell, but Van had never really thought what it took to run a household before. The grocery lists, the utility bills, making sure everyone had clothes... clean clothes... the luxuries like phones, television, internet... it was a lot. Between working and school, Van had very little time just to chill with his friends. Hell, he only saw Jasey a lot of times 'cause they had the same classes and because they lived together. Also, carrying groceries up the stairs to his apartment was hell too. He set down one handful of bags to unlock the door and push it open before picking them back up with his keys still in his hand, kicking the door shut behind him. He walked into the kitchen, setting things down on the countertops. It was his week to buy groceries, he and Jasey switched off every other week because, as luck would have it, they each got paid every two weeks... and when he got paid one week, she got paid the next.
It was a good system. He pulled the shopping list that he and Jasey had made and placed it on the table, intending to cross referance as he put things away. Reaching into the bags, he started pulling out the canned goods and such, placing them on the table before pulling out the frozen foods and placing them in the freezer. Putting the milk and other cold products in the fridge was next and then he began working on filling up the cabinets. After he was done putting things away, he sat down at the table and looked over the list, wondering what he should fix for dinner that night. Mm... fish sounded good. He decided that would be what he made. He glanced at the clock on the stove and decided that maybe he should just go ahead and start cooking.
After all, Jasey would be home soon anyway. He pushed himself up to his feet, throwing the bags into the trash bin and pulled the fish from the freezer. Luckily, it was something he'd just bought and it wasn't completely frozen. He smiled slightly, this would be a good surprise for Jasey. His mother had taught him this recipe when he was younger before she'd died. It wasn't something that he'd done since he and Jasey had moved in together. He moved over to the oven and turned it on to preheat at 375 degrees before he took up some milk and salt and mixed it in a shallow bowl. He grabbed some bread he'd bought specially for this and he began to combine the bread crumbs with some paprika and parmesan cheese in a separate bowl.
Now... he bit his lip as he tried to remember what to do next before he grabbed the fish that he'd bought and dipped it into the bowl with the milk and salt and then the crumb mixture, coating each piece of fish evenly before placing them in a pan he'd pulled out. He took the other bowl and melted some butter in the microwave, drizzling it over the fish in the pan before putting it in the oven to bake. He set the timer for 25 minutes and then set about cleaning up his mess. He washed and rinsed all the dishes, placing them into the dishwasher to run later with the dinner plates, and it was as the timer was nearing the end, he heard the sound of the door opening up. He smiled slightly as he pulled out plates, glasses, and silverware, setting them out on the table.
He heard Jasey call out and ask if he was home and he smiled. "In the kitchen, Jas!" he called out, opening the oven door to check the fish. He pulled the rack out with his pot holder and lightly poked at the fish with a fork. Seemed done to him. He pulled the pan out, replaced the rack and closed the door, turning off the oven. He turned to look at Jasey as she entered the kitchen. "Dinner's ready," he said, laughing softly as he moved to the microwave and pulled out a bowl of corn for them to dish out as well, setting the bowl on the table with a spoon in it and then carrying the pan over to the table, setting it on a pot holder so it didn't burn the table. He grabbed his glass then and poured himself something to drink before sitting down and serving himself.
"So how was your day today, Jas?" he asked, putting some of the fish and the corn on his plate. He picked up his knife to hold the fish down as he lightly worked the meat apart with his fork, smiling as it pulled apart without even having to be cut. That was perfect! He took a bite, tilting his head as he chewed. Eh, it was alright, but his mom's was better. It would do though. Maybe she let hers soak in the milk for a little longer, he wasn't entirely sure. It was still good, but not the best he'd had. "Thought I'd surprise you with something different... hope you like it," he stated with a small smile as he looked over at his friend and roommate.

It was freaking cold out. And Jasey was not so thrilled about it. She was ready to go home and slip into warm pajamas and drink some hot cocoa. The petite girl pulled her coat closer around her as she headed out of her job at Old Navy. Fortunately, the apartment she shared with Storm was within walking distance of the store. But, having to be out in the cold in the process seriously sucked. So when her eyes spotted their building, she almost ran the last hundred feet in pure joy. Just the first step into the warm building made her sigh in relief. So much better. She checked their room's mailbox in the lobby, taking out a couple letters and bills. They had gotten lucky finding such a nice place for such a reasonable price. Especially with both of them in school and with mostly part-time day jobs.
She flipped through the mail as she walked up to the apartment she and Storm shared, checking the door and seeing that it was already unlocked. Which meant Storm had beaten her home. Hopefully. She walked in, putting the mail down on a side table and started taking her jacket off. "Van, you here?" She heard him call back from the kitchen area, a smile covering her lips. It was a miracle having a guy around who could cook. She had enough trouble making microwave popcorn let alone an actual meal. And whatever he was cooking smelled really good. She could hear her stomach grumbling at the sheer thought of being able to eat soon. She hung up her coat, before walking towards the kitchen to see what her roomie was up to.
The closer Jasey got to the kitchen, the more her mouth started watering. And then her mouth just about fell open at what she saw Storm making. She walked over, smiling when he said dinner was ready. "Holy crap.. this looks amazing!" Looked like the day might not be so bad after all! She took a glass down from one of the cabinets and poured herself something to drink before grabbing some silverware from one of the drawers for the both of them. She took a seat, putting some of the food Storm had cooked onto her plate. It smelled incredible. She picked up a piece f the fish with her fork and put it in her mouth. And it tasted just as amazing as it had smelled. "Mmm.. so good.." Storm was such a great cook. It was the one talent she never seemed to pick up, both alive or dead.
She swallowed her mouthful before answering her friend's question. "Busy. With the Christmas season coming up and everything, stuff was selling pretty quick." It was a good thing she was fast with her hands at the register, otherwise they'd all be screwed. "How about you? Anything interesting?" She took a few more bites of her meal, so happy to be home with a good dinner and good company. Her brown eyes looked across the table at her roomie when he spoke again, smiling back. "You didn't really have to surprise me though. But it's really good!" She chuckled lightly, her eyes lowering back down to her plate. Why on earth would he have wanted tp surprise her? It wasn't like it was a special occassion or anything. Either way, she was flattered that he'd go through all the trouble.

ready, set, go!to young to live a lie, look into my eyes. back to zero, your time's about to come. let them know you're not just anyone. Van was rather pleased with the fact that Jasey seemed impressed with the meal, so impressed, in fact, that she looked almost surprised! He couldn't help the feeling of pride coarsing through him as she stated that it looked amazing. "Don't sound so shocked, Jas... I do know a thing or two," he stated teasingly, chuckling softly as he watched her get a glass for herself and then get silverware for the both of them. He watched her as she sat down and served herself and waited for her reaction. While he thought it was good, it was entirely possible that she didn't like it. Though it seemed his fear was misplaced because she said that it was good, and he didn't think that she was faking it because she went back for another bite.
He nodded as she stated that she was busy 'cause Christmas season was in full swing. "Oh yeah, I totally get that." Even though Spencer's didn't do many holiday changes, there were changes done to the store and such. New clothes put out, decorations and shit. Yeah, it wasn't as big as Old Navy where Jasey worked but it was still a big to-do. He shrugged as she turned the question back on him. "Not much different. Had to put out the new Nightmare Before Christmas shit and I did see this really awesome Grinch shirt that was pretty awesome." It was a wonder he didn't blow his whole paycheck back into the shop... or into Hot Topic. "I thought about stopping by the GameStop, but... then I remembered I had to go grocery shopping..." And if he'd gone into GameStop, it would have been all over.
He took another bite of his fish and looked back up at her, tilting his head slightly. "I know I didn't have to surprise you, but I wanted to. I figured with the topic that I wanted to discuss tonight, it might be beneficial to me if... maybe I bribed you with a good dinner," he stated, smirking slightly. Either way, it wouldn't hurt his chances, it would only help him. He doubted being a good cook would hinder him in anyway in getting Jasey to agree to his latest ploy. He smirked as he saw her reaction to this as the wheels in her head began turning, wondering just what it is that he was up to. What game was he playing tonight? His eyes gleamed with amusement as their eyes remained locked and he took another bite from his plate.
He leaned back then, picking up his glass and still watching her. He swallowed and raised the glass to his lips, running his tongue over his teeth to catch any stray food before taking a drink from his glass. "Give it up, Jas, you ain't gonna figure it out until I'm good and ready to let it out. So you might as well enjoy dinner..." He smirked, leaning forward. "While you still can." He added as a bit of a tease, though of course what he wanted to talk about wasn't exactly dangerous, well... not physically at least. Only spiritually. Emotionally. Mentally. But otherwise, she'd be perfectly safe.

The thought that she had been alive and with her family not even a half a year ago was like something out of a paranormal movie. Most days she made it through just fine, keeping busy with school and her job. But there were a few select days that she just couldn’t take it all. So coming home to something like this was really nice. Especially with it being the first Christmas she couldn’t be with her family. Having friends like Van around made it better. She grinned as he answered her, shaking her head slightly. “Maybe so, but a guy who can cook is a rare animal. Can’t blame me for being amazed!” And the dinner really was amazing.
She continued to eat as Van spoke, responding to her question on how his day had gone. Both of them had worked that day, so trading stories on work was pretty much all they got. She had to remind herself that she needed to make a small Christmas list so she could go shopping next week when it was her turn to buy groceries. She giggled when he mentioned Game Stop, knowing full well that he would have spent more money than necessary in there if he could. Maybe that’s what she could get him for Christmas. A few games might work. Shopping for guys usually sucked, but at least with the games she’d have a chance on them working out. When she thought about it though, Van was probably the only person she was buying anything for this year anyway.
Jasey’s brown eyes flicked over to the male when he spoke again, her nose wrinkling slightly. Van was always full of surprises, but nothing that was ever this much. What the hell kind of topic made him do something like this anyway? Her mind immediately jumped to conclusions and figured he was going to say something bad. And why the flying hell did she need to be bribed?! Her eyes searched his as he sat there looking at her, not sure whether or not she needed to be worried or annoyed that he wasn’t saying anything. Annoyance started to tip the scales though. And she knew enough to know that he wasn’t going to spill so easy. Which only got her more annoyed. And from the grin on his lips, he knew it was getting to her.
She stabbed a piece of fish with her fork, huffing as he said he wasn’t going to say anything yet. “You are a royal pain in my ass mister. Don’t you know it’s not nice to make people suffer?” She finished eating, taking both of their empty plates and bringing them over to the sink. He might have cooked dinner, but she was going to clean up. It was only fair. Even if he was being a giant butt at the moment by keeping secrets. She took a container out of a drawer to put the leftovers in, sealing it and putting in the fridge for later. Next came the pan the fish had been in, as she filled it with hot water and soap to soak. Once it was all done, she turned back around to face Van, arching an eyebrow at him. “Ready to spill yet?”

ready, set, go!to young to live a lie, look into my eyes. back to zero, your time's about to come. let them know you're not just anyone. Vanyel laughed softly as Jasey pointed out that a guy who could cook was a rare animal and that he couldn't really blame her for being amazed. He supposed that was true. Not many guys liked cooking all that much. And if they did, most didn't really want to admit that they liked to cook, because it was a 'girly' trait or some other nonsense. "You know what we should do, Jas?" he asked, looking over at her. "We should open up like... a restaurant. You could be the hostess and I could be the Head Chef, and we could have a big ol' time together," he stated, grinning slightly at her. "Maybe once we graduate, we should do that... wouldn't that be cool?" he asked, grinning at her. He had always wanted to work at a fancy restaurant as the head cook.
He smiled over at her as she wrinkled her nose as she didn't seem all that impressed with him keeping a secret from her. He continued to smile as she just seemed to get more and more agitated. He laughed as she stabbed her fish particularly violently and finished his own plate of food as she stated that he was a royal pain in her ass. "Why thank you, I strive to be the best at everything I do," he stated, laughing simply. "And I'm not making you suffer, Jasey. Ij ust wanted to have a nice dinner with you before I told you in case you didn't like what I had to say..." And decided to move out... but he didn't say that last bit of fear flashing through his head. He watched as she got up and took his plate to the sink.
He sat there, watching her as she did the dishes and put the food away and then came back over to the table and asked if he was ready to spill yet. He took a deep breath, watching her. "I'm sorry that you're annoyed... but really, I just wanted it to be a good night..." he stated simply. "And since I don't have money really to take you to some big fancy place, I thought this would be better." He leaned forward over the table slightly. "Jasey, I have... something to confess. I know we haven't really known one another all that long, but living here in close quarters with you... its... um... I've kind of developed... feelings for you that are... stronger than just the feelings you have for a friend." He was staring at his hands at this point, blushing quite a bit.
He sighed again, looking up at her slowly. "Jasey... would you be my girlfriend?" He remained silent following his question and confession, wondering if Jasey were just going to laugh at him. That would probably be worse than if she just told him that she didn't have the same kind of feelings, though that would still hurt a little. He thought they had something. Of course, he'd never really had female friends before, and he'd never had a girlfriend before either due to the whole 'leukemia' thing, people had just thought he was sick, but no one needs to be going out places when they were sick, especially when they were with other people that they could get sick. And then they'd found out why he was so sick, and everything just became tighter controled. Can't let him out because the smallest thing could kill him. Yeah... that sucked. He just hoped if she didn't feel the same way, they could still be friends.

It really was odd being around a guy who actually enjoyed cooking meals. Sure, her dad had liked to grill, but give him any other type of recipe and he’d run for the hills. Her eyebrows rose slightly when he questioned her, chuckling when he continued the question. Run a restaurant huh? That could be pretty cool. “That’s an interesting idea. And what kind of food to you propose we’d make hmm?” She really didn’t have a preference, but she figured the two easiest would be American or Italian. You really couldn’t go wrong with either, and they were always the more popular choices to hit. But she definitely thought he’d be good at working as a cook. He always amazed her with his cooking, so why not share it?
But food seemed secondary to her now. She just wanted to know what he was hiding. She hated being in the dark. And the fact he laughed when she stabbed her fish made it worse. She rolled her eyes as he spoke, crossing her arms over her chest. “I doubt whatever you’ve got to say is that bad. We’re already dead… it can’t get worse than that.” And in her mind, that was the truth. After dying, nothing seemed all that scary anymore. Sure, yeah, okay, she could get emotionally hurt, but as for physical, she wasn’t worried about that. So whatever he had to tell her couldn’t be that bad. Besides, even if it was really bad news, she was a big girl. She could handle it. Her strength to deal with bad things was something she prided herself on.
Washing the dishes at least was a little calming. Jasey didn’t feel quite as annoyed by the time she finished up doing all the dishes and putting the leftovers away. She was still anxious to hear what he’d have to say, but at least now she didn’t feel like beating it out of him. She took a seat back at the table as he started to explain, her eyebrows arching up when he mentioned not having the money to take her out. Since when did that matter? Her knee started to bounce as she started getting a little fidgety. And was surprised her jaw didn’t hit the floor when he admitted to liking her more than just as a friend. What!? Her entire life she’d been the girl seen as one of the guys. Not the type of girl most guys would go after. So why was he?
She blinked, trying to sum up a response, until he looked up at her and spoke again. She was in complete shock. He couldn’t be serious… could he? But as she looked over at him, the look in his eyes said he was one hundred percent serious. She chewed lightly at her bottom lip, her cheeks flushing pink. She would admit that she thought he was cute, and since living together, they’d become really close. She was just surprised it only took about a month for him to think she was girlfriend material. “I um… wow… okay, didn’t expect that.” She didn’t know what to say. Her brown eyes shifted briefly to her hands, before looking back over to Van, a small smile on her lips. “Sure… but can I ask you why? I’m not usually the girl most guys go for.” Of course, she was happy, but curiosity still got to her.
